How Much is Your College Degree Worth? Not as Much as You Think

When I was in high school, my parents always told me that the only way I was ever going to do anything in life is if I went to college. NOT going wasn’t even discussed. You had to go to college if you wanted a job. If you wanted to work at McDonald’s or Wal-Mart forever, then fine, you could skip out on college - but everyone knows (at least according to my parents back then) that working at Wal-Mart wasn’t really a job as much as it was a sentence to the worst life ever.

Well, I went to college, and I even did my parents one better and went to graduate school. Armed with both a BA and MFA, I was certain I could pretty much get any job I applied for, and would get paid 35K at the minimum.

Ha. Ha. Ha. And I’m not alone. Not only have most of my friends with MFAs scrambled to find anything to pay the bills post graduation (working at Borders, in a file room…with freaking MFAs!!), but it seems like degrees in general are losing the battle to inflation. Read More »

Top 5 Classic High School Hazings

hazing.jpg

If you’ve done time in a High School, chances are you got yours as a 9th grader, in one way or another. That first year (of fear) was so magical for me that I developed a glandular problem, thanks to the amount of sweating needed to keep my ever quivering body cool.

But alas, those days are over–and typical public hazing has been replaced by weird, secret, bizarre hazing. Sure, I got my fair share of wedgies, but sodomized by a sporting god? Never. I imagine that the bullies who facilitated my torture would have actually protected me from that kind of thing, in a weird, ‘Hey thats my bitch’ kind of way.’

So in a tribute to the good ol’ days, here’s five classics that I don’t miss, but would take any day over getting my ass burned with boiling water.

Post-Grad Finance Crash Course

wall-street-fighter-header.JPG

So you just made Mom and Dad real proud–you’ve graduated from college and you’re still completely alive. Both nuts still attached? What a champ! Although the keg parties and late night puking into laundry baskets might not end for another few months, you should probably start thinking about your money situation.

Step One: Student Loans

If you took out student loans to pay for those joyous four years, you will soon be approaching a very important time period. You may have been made painfully aware of this by your parents or from countless postcards and solicited junk mail. Student loan interest rates recalculate each July 1st.

And thanks to a huge collapse in the financial market along with the continuing signs of a nationwide economic recession – interest rates are nice and low. Just follow this little formula I came up with:

Massive Financial Sector Layoffs = Massive Personal Financial Savings For Those In Student Debt= Massive Boner. Read More »

You’re Not Going To Like This: College Binge-Drinking Linked To Heart Disease

binge drinking, crazy drinking, drinking, puking

Remember the last time you drank a case of beer, half a bottle of tequila, four cups of jungle juice, and hated yourself for it in the morning? Yeah, well now you’re really going to regret it. A study by the American Heart Association (AHA) found that heavy drinkers have double the chances of developing heart disease, compared to moderate drinkers.

The culprit of the problem comes from an increase in something called a C-reactive protein (CRP), which marks inflamation in the body, increases of which can lead to cardiovascular problems. “Moderate drinkers,” or those who drink only two to five drinks at a time, one or two days a week, have half the CRP levels of those who drink in greater execess. 3 Tips For Vacationing With Your Parents

parentsSo I just got back from three very long days of vacationing with my folks.

I mean, VERY long.

Here’s the thing: it totally sucked. I mean, I love spending time with my parents. I do. We get along very well. But three days of touristing in some random little rural town without any break from my parents EVER just isn’t my idea of a good time.

So here are a few tips that I wish I knew before I went. Good luck, you poor brave souls.

(1) Insist on having at least a little say in the location.

Okay, we went to this town in upstate NY (5 hours from their house, 3 from my apartment) for seemingly no reason. When I was informed, I did not question. Foolishly, I said instead, “Whatever you guys want.” Fatal mistake. You see, my mother decided that we just HAD to go see this giant kaleidoscope. Yes, that’s right: apparently, the basis of this trip was a giant kaleidoscope.

Anyway, we finally get to the stupid thing and they take one look at it and my dad says, “I’m not paying 10 bucks a person for this!”, my mom says, “I can’t lean on this thing for 7 minutes!”, and next thing I know we’re back at the motel trying to figure out what to do for the next three days. Four members of Harvard’s “Right to Serve” tour were arrested this morning at a military recruiting station in Portland, Maine on the charge of criminal trespassing.

The arrested members were Samantha G.M. Barnard ’09, Robert J. Ross ’09, Amary K. Wiggin ’09, and Jacob P. Reitan, a Harvard Divinity School student who first conceived of the tour.

Twenty Harvard students have been traveling since Saturday on a week-long trip up and down the east coast to protest the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy barring openly homosexual or bisexual recruits from enlisting in the armed services.  [Harvard Crimson]

Miami Lands #1 Seed For NCAA Baseball Championship

After hearing the good news that they would be hosting the Coral Gables Regional as the No. 1 national seed of 64 teams for the 2008 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, Miami players and coaches watching the selection show in the clubhouse were thrown an unexpected curveball.

No. 2 seed Missouri (38-19), No. 3 Mississippi (37-24) and No. 4 Bethune-Cookman (36-20) are set to come to town this weekend in a surprise bracket that left some wondering how the top seed didn’t get matched up with the likes of Mt. St. Mary’s (21-32) or Texas Southern (16-32) in its regional instead of lower No. 1 seeds such as North Carolina or LSU.

Miami will take on Bethune-Cookman in the second game Friday at 4 p.m., following the match-up between Missouri and Mississippi. All games will air on ESPNU, with games at both 12 and 4 p.m. through Sunday, and the final game on Monday if necessary. [The Miami Hurricane]

Grad School 101

“This is a ‘money maker’ and has nothing to do with what one knows or how one is able to get through graduate school,” wrote a disgruntled student regarding the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). However the Educational Testing Service, the organization that develops and administers standardized tests, disagrees. According to them, the GRE is intended to measure “verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills.”The stinging critique was part of a longer comment posted in response to a blog entry entitled “I hate the GRE.” Read More »

To Be Content in Life You Must Get Radical

24624188.jpg

What is a radical career? And does it involve surfing? These were the questions I had when I met up with Sally Hogshead, a noted advertising creative director turned author and motivational speaker. (And yes, she recognizes the humor in her name, so I’m not going there.) Sally’s new book, Radical Careering, explores the 100 best ways to live your work life, all presented in a simple, yet startling original way.

“I come from advertising, so the format of the book to me was inseparable from the content,” says Hogshead. “I know how to communicate with people so they’ll respond. If you’ve been to the career section of the bookstore, you know how awful it is. It’s dark and scary and there’s all these losers hanging out there. I’m not one of those people! I needed something that reflected me.”

Hogshead started her career exploration path after her own ad agency, which opened on Sept. 10, 2001, faced a rough future.

“I learned a lot of lessons; my own path had been seemingly easy, but after 9/11, I realized I wasn’t charmed. Essentially, this is what I learned: you are driving your own train! You have to create your own path and be passionate about what you do; otherwise, you’re just a victim of circumstance. That’s radical careering.” Read More »
